Under ominous skies, MetLife’s Charles McCarthy rocketed up Burke Mountain in Northern Vermont to win the 2nd annual Burke Mt Hillclimb (and beat a torrential downpour). The racers took on a 3.7 mile long paved hill climb covering 2,037 vertical feet with an average grade of 9.7 percent. It began this morning at the Sherburne Base Lodge at Burke Mountain Ski Resort and traveled up Burke’s toll road, finishing at the summit. McCarthy, well known for his climbing ability (winner of the prologue hillclimb at this year’s Fitchburg Lonsgo classic and 7th in the prologue at this year’s Green Mt Stage Race) again demonstrated that he is one of the very best climbers in New England by winning the event. McCarthy also took home a portion of the $5,000 plus in cash and prizes awarded to the top finishers.
